AEO vs. GEO: What’s the Difference and Why Does It Matter?

AEO and GEO.

Two more acronyms business owners are suddenly expected to understand.

If you’ve heard both lately and wondered what the difference is, here’s the easiest way I can explain it:

AEO helps your content become part of the answer.

GEO helps your brand become a source worth referencing.

There’s overlap between the two, and good SEO supports both. But as more people use AI to research businesses, products and services, understanding the difference is becoming useful.

So let’s make it simple.

What Is AEO?

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimisation.

The goal is to create content that clearly answers the questions people are asking.

Think about a search like:

“How much should a small business spend on Google Ads?”

Good AEO means answering that question clearly, then giving the reader enough information to understand the answer.

That usually means:

  • Answering real customer questions
  • Getting to the point quickly
  • Using clear headings
  • Writing in plain English
  • Providing useful examples
  • Keeping information accurate and current

The interesting part is that this isn’t wildly different from good SEO.

It’s also just good writing.

If someone comes to your website looking for an answer, help them find it.

What Is GEO?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimisation.

This is more about your visibility within AI-powered experiences such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot.

Instead of only asking:

“Where do we rank on Google?”

We’re starting to ask:

“When someone asks an AI platform about our industry, does our business show up?”

Your website might be cited as a source. Your brand might be mentioned. Your content might help support an AI-generated answer.

That’s an important change in how people can discover a business.

AEO vs. GEO: The Simple Difference

Here’s how I think about it:

AEO = Can we clearly answer the question?

GEO = Are we a credible source worth referencing?

AEO is largely about the quality and clarity of the answer.

GEO goes wider.

Your website matters, but so does your overall online reputation.

That can include:

  • Customer reviews
  • Industry publications
  • News coverage
  • Associations and partners
  • Interviews and podcasts
  • Community discussions
  • Credible websites mentioning or linking to you

Think of it this way.

If a restaurant tells you it has the best pizza in the city, that’s marketing.

If customers, local publications and food writers keep recommending it, that’s reputation.

The same basic idea applies online.

You can tell Google and AI systems what you’re good at.

It’s even more powerful when other credible sources help confirm it.

Where Does SEO Fit?

Right in the middle of all of this.

SEO hasn’t suddenly become irrelevant because AEO and GEO exist.

Your website still needs useful content, good technical SEO, internal links, authority, clear information and a good user experience.

Google’s own guidance continues to say that its existing SEO best practices apply to its AI search experiences.

So don’t throw out what already works.

Build on it.

What Should Businesses Actually Do?

You don’t need an entirely new marketing department for this.

Start here:

  1. Keep your SEO foundation strong. Make sure your website can be found, crawled and understood.
  2. Answer real customer questions. Your emails, meetings and sales conversations are full of potential content ideas.
  3. Be specific about what you do. Make your expertise, services and audience clear.
  4. Create genuinely useful content. Add your experience, examples and perspective instead of repeating what everyone else has already written.
  5. Build a real reputation. Reviews, partnerships, mentions, links and great work all contribute to how your business is perceived online.
  6. Pay attention to AI visibility. Rankings and traffic still matter, but start watching where your business is appearing in AI-powered search too.

And remember who all of this is ultimately for.

People.

Write for people. Make it easy to understand. Build genuine authority. Then make sure search engines and AI systems can find it.

AEO and GEO Work Together

If you remember nothing else, remember this:

AEO helps you provide the answer.

GEO helps you become a source worth referencing.

SEO helps build the foundation for both.

You don’t need to memorize every new acronym that comes along.

You need to understand how people are finding businesses like yours and make sure you’re there when they’re looking.
